Finding the Best Photographer

May 21st, 2009

Looking for a photographer for a special day?  Well my experience being a San Diego Photographer has given me some insight on how to make the best choice for that special occasion.  So don’t even think about popping open the yellow pages and picking any old photographer that you find.  Take it from my experience and follow these steps on choosing a good photographer.

Many people want to remember special memories with pictures so it is very important that you do research on your photographer, especially if it is a wedding, I know from first hand experience as a San Diego Wedding Photographer.  Start with friends and family.  See if they have any photographers that they would recommend to you.  This way you can start building your list of possible photographers.

After you have accumulated a list of photographers you should visit their websites.  Check out events they have shot and determine whether or not that is the type of photography you are looking for.  Photographers who have online portfolios will save you a lot of time because then you can prequalify them instead of having to wait til your first meeting to see their portfolio.

Now you are ready to conduct some interviews.  This doesn’t have to be in person.  You can do it over the phone.  The goal of these phone interviews is to ask questions.  Questions that will help you determine if this is the right person for the job.  The more specific you are in asking your questions, the more specific your prospective photographer can be helping you better understand if this is the right person for the job.  By doing this you will narrow the field even more, and from that you can finally schedule to meet those in person who you like so far.

After you have met with your two or three possible photographers it is time to decide which one is right for you.  The key factors to remember when deciding on your photographer is to make sure your choosing the one that you like and the one that understands the vision you have about how you want your memories to be captured.  Before you make the commitment to the photographer make sure you have asked all the questions you had and have considered all the photographers policies carefully.  Once you feel you have found the perfect photographer for your event, then go right ahead and make the commitment.

Completing all these steps will be huge in helping ensure that you find the right person for the job.  Doing this simple process will help you determine a couple of very important things.  It will allow you to get to know your photographer more than any other method.  This is important because it will allow you to know if this person has the style and the vision you are looking for on your special day.  And most importantly you will have a piece of mind that you will not have found any other way in regards to knowing if you have found the right person.  On special days, the last thing you need to stress over is the photographer.

Performer Headshots from Both Ends of the Camera

May 21st, 2009

There are two basic components to the headshot of a performer.  One is the performer, posing.  The other is the photographer, snapping.  Dallas photographer Mark Oristano works both ends of the equation.

With 30 years of acting under his belt, Oristano has been in more than 50 stage shows, from Shakespeare to Mamet. In his work as a portrait photographer, Oristano is glad to be able to offer friends in the Dallas-Ft. Worth theater communiunity quality shots and a good rate.

“I feel like I can make people a little more comfortable, even before the shoot starts, if they know that I’m an actor myself and that I know both what they go through, and what they need out of their session,” Oristano says.

Once you get the subject to relax, you’ve got half the session battle won.Being used to being in public and used to being photographed are two very different things.

“It’s very rare that a headshot choice comes out of the first twenty or so shots of a session,” Oristano said between breaks at his Dallas studio.”Since I speak their language, the language of the stage, we can compare notes on roles and things and build a good rapport.”

Mark works in studio with hair/makeup stylist Kari Engelbrecht to create the proper look for each subject, which changes with age, coloring, wardrobe etc.

“Kari has a great eye for makeup, hair and coloring.I let Kari call the shots in hair/makeup and style.”

And how much does he trust himself as a photographer?

“I use a remote shutter releae, and I take my own headshots.  I’ve even taken the book jacket photo for my new book, A SPORTSCASTER’S GUIDE TO WATCHING FOOTBALL.

Oristano also shoots in an old-style black-and-white fashion, which he calls “Hollywood/1935.”Shots like those from the 30’s of the great George Hurrell.

4 Great Ideas on How to Make Your Wedding Photography Exceptional

May 21st, 2009

4 great Tips for Making Great Digital Wedding Photography even Greater

Brides and grooms everywhere are beginning to realize the expertise of professional photographers to get the best digital wedding photography images for their special occasion. And why shouldn’t they? They would abosultely want to obtain only the best photography taken so that their photographic memories would be sealed for as long as they both live.

More and more people are now gravitating to the using of their own digital cameras to capture pictures of their weddings. One of the reasons for this is that the quality is better compared to the traditional and old fashioned film cameras. Another interesting fact is that the photographs can be stored not only in their hard-bound leather covered photo albums but also on website albums online.

Today, people are using their computers more than ever before for communication. With computers, they can easily upload and transfer their wedding pictures and share them with family members and close friends all over the world. You do not have to rely on slow emails just to send your pictures. Today photos are being uploaded manually so other people can view the images on their own home computers or online

This is one of the many advantages of digital photography. If photos are taken properly, you are pretty much guaranteed that you and you special person of interest will never regret having used digital photography for your wedding pictures.

Below are some of the tips to get the best digital photography for your wedding.

1. Choosing the right backgrounds.

Photos can really look awesome once they are shot with the perfect background. You can use the florals and decorations in the church and in the reception areas as a back draft for your photos. Be sure to fix some spread out festive decorations so that they will appear mostly with perfection on photographs.

Always remind the photographer to check if the view is good before taking any pictures. It does not mean that you have to stand on the same corner or place. The best photographer is able to make even the most simple of background look great on photo if it is taken in the right place and angle.

2.  Look out for any types of glass or mirrors.

Glasses can cause harsh reflections in pictures. Should it be an eye-glass, outside window or champagne glasses.  One way or another, they will cause a reflection or brightness to reflect back on the camera it is included in the photographs.

To avoid this, the tilt and position of the camera can be manipulated so that it will not directly bounce off the glass. The photo can be taken sideways or downwards but never on eye level.

3. The perfection of timing.

People being photographed should not always be looking straight into the camera. And none of the people have to be smiling at the lens too.

One way to reach your goals is to photograph the moment in a photojouranlsitic manner You will see that catching persons on film when they are in their candid state is much better than having them wearing a fixed expression. Photographing those special moments in a quiet and non-distracting approach can produce great results.
4. Review each photo.

To utilize the maximimum the memory that your digital camera can handle, it is sometimes a good idea to review every photo shot taken. Over shooting the same subject at a wedding should be avoided, be more original.

It’s best to take a variety of images for a better selection.

The greatest wedding photography is made even greater now with digital cameras. If there’s one thing you should remember it’s your photos on your weddings day.

Black & White Is Colorful In Hollywood Style

May 21st, 2009

When you think of Hollywood in the 1930’s, you think of photographs by people like George Hurrell.Amazing shots of the great stars of 30’s film… Harlow, Bogey, all of ‘em… the actors who filled the screen in the 1930’s.  But the painstaking technique that went into such shots doesn’t seem to be seen much in this digital era.

From the Hollywood of the 30’s, Dallas Photographer Mark Oristano has created “Hollywood/1935″.”

“I always loved Hurrell’s work,” says portrait photographer Oristano, “and a couple of years back I studied with Michael Grecco, the great portrait photographer from L.A.Michael showed us Mole-Richardson’s and other old, constant-style lighting.  When I got back home, I hit ebay and found some old lights and went to work with them.”

But to get the true effect, Oristano decided to step back from digital and return to the film camera.  But not just any film camera.

“It’s a 4×5 Speed Graphic from the US Army Signal Corps from World War II.  It’s the same model camera that Joe Rosenthal used to take the famous Iwo Jima photo. It’s well over sixty years old and it still takes great photos.A 4×5 negative gives a detail and a softness you don’t get digitally.”

The old-time look has begun to catch on in Dallas, where former sportscaster Oristano has been shooting engagement shots, senior portraits and more in the Hollywood/1935 style.

“The big reward comes when they see their final result.  After working with my stylist, and going through the shoot, when they see a 17×22 fine art print of their shot, they’re just speechless.”

The shoots take about twice as long as an average portrait session given the delicacy of the lighting.  The techniques, while fairly simple to figure out from the old Hollywood photos, are often difficult to replicate.  But with enough practice, you can be throwing shadows with the best of them and making anybody look like a star.

The Art and creativity of Digital Photography

May 21st, 2009

The Creative Art of Digital Photography

Personal PC Computers Canon Cameras – these are the popular brands of the camera world today. We live in a society that is constantly changed by technology. Even the arts have continued changed due to new technologies. Think of these facts: from a painters drawings to painting to film photography to digital photography, we have come full circle in the visual arts world. There are many ways to capture that special moment. New technology is continually being developed to make art easier and more fun. However, you should know that the art of digital photography is not as simple as aim and shoot.

The art of digital photography requires skill in order to impress your photography customers. Even though various people may reason out that digital photography art can always be edited, many people do not really know how much work editing can be. Oh sure, we can say that technology has reached a level wherein a person needs to do practically nothing in order to achieve a great photograph, but of course, you need to know how to use the tools properly in order to do that.

The art of digital photography, in order to be truly mastered, needs three T’s: Time, talent and tactical placement of equipment. No, that’s not right. You need time, talent and treasure. Just what does this mean?

1) Time – one cannot be an instant expert in digital photography. You need to take the time to learn all about it. You may think you know it all but you can never stop learning with photography. Remember that for all its power, a steamroller cannot be used to do the work of a hammer. There is wisdom in harnessing power properly.

Taking the time to train your self in the art of digital photography is something akin to sharpening a knife using a grindstone or forging a fine katana (that’s the Japanese samurai sword) by heating it and folding it over a thousand times –it may be painful, but it is necessary to produce the best.

Talent in photography only comes through proper training and years of experience. You need to have an eye for the subjects that would make a great photograph. Otherwise, you will only end up being mediocre in a field that requires greatness.

Of course, the proper training can actually enhance your inherent talent and help you sharpen your skills in the art of digital photography.

3) Treasure – as said before, you will need the proper tools in order to be successful in the art of digital photography. Choosing the good camera gear can be costly so be ready to spend some money. Although there are a lot of digital art photography equipment that can be bought at inexpensive prices, the best equipment needs some serious pocket digging. This, of course, tests your courage because there’s nothing scarier to a man than having to pull out his wallet in the name of an untested interest.

Once you have invested money in the art of digital photography, there’s no turning back.

The art of digital photography may seem like it requires a lot. However, in order to be truly successful in something you need love and love always requires sacrifice. You should keep that in mind.

Digital Photography – Once You Start Applying It, You Will not Want to Quit!

May 21st, 2009

Digital photography is a simple and easy way for you who like getting out and about and capturing photos. The technology applied in digital photography will enable you to experiment with your camera indoors and capture photos of your family or pets as much as you like. Just click and click, and you’ll soon love being involved with digital photography.

The utilize of digital photography present you with lots of benefits which you cannot get with a regular camera. Using this digital technology will make you save lots of money, for you don’t have to purchase new film all the time. What’s more, there is no need for you to pay for the processing expenses involved with conventional cameras.

Great and Suitable Way for Beginners

Even if you are new to taking photos, digital photography is a good bet for you to get started with. As you know that there won’t be any film wasted, you will find that you become better at experimenting with taking pictures. You can just delete the already-taken picture that you do not like from your camera.

Instead of using a film, digital photography takes a memory card, meaning that you have total control over what you want to keep on the card. The interesting fact is that a single card can take hundreds of photos at a time, as a result you can benefit from all the profits of digital photography without the expenses involved in processing.

Getting on Your Computer

You must have this kind of experience with your regular camera, when you become conscious that the pictures you thought as good turn to be looking rather disappointing once they come back from the developer. Out of twenty-seven or so exposures, there might only be a dozen or so that you really desire to put in the photo album.

With digital photography, such thing will not happen. You can soon see what the picture you have taken looks like by looking at it on the screen on your camera. If you like it, you keep it on the memory card and then download all the pictures you have taken onto your computer. Thus, digital photography often results in a bigger collection of photos than you would have otherwise. But, what you need to do is only keeping them all on your computer and then printing the ones you like directly on your own printer.

With digital photography, you’ll have much more control over how your finished photos turn out. You can do whatever you like with this camera, whether you wish to print the pictures in normal sized or much larger (more like a poster). You can also play around with the colors and tones used. Digital photography is a new versatile and fascinating way of capturing photos. Don’t be surprised if once you start, you definitely won’t want to stop!

Are you still at sea of knowing more about digital photography? Just look around and click the links your best answer herein!

PHOTO TECHNIQUES

May 21st, 2009

USING LINES & SHAPES IN YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY

Photos are about what each individual prefers, but there are key rules of photo composition that can help build a foundation of a great photo that you can print on canvas. One of the key elements to look for when composing a photo is  ‘lines and different shapes’. It is helpful to train yourself to look for lines and shapes. They can be a powerful building block that can have a significant impact on your photo. Lines and shapes are helpful in adding mood and atmosphere to your finished product or creating a desired effect. They can be useful in leading the eyes from one part to another or leading the eye to a particular part of your image or another part.

Using lines and shapes takes some practice and it is often beneficial to go back through previous photos you have taken to see what has worked and what hasn’t worked. Have a look at all of the different lines and shapes that you can use. Using these tips will add to your finished print.

Using Horizontal Lines

Horizontal lines can be useful in creating photos that are calming. They can have the ability to convey stability and restfulness. An example of this would be a foal sleeping in flowers. The most common horizontal lines to be found in photographs are normally horizons,  but be careful not to run the horizon directly through the centre of the photograph dividing the equal amounts of the sky and landscapes. This may often have a negative effect and possibly create a dull image. This is not always case. A great practice to pick out the more impressive part of your scene, for example sunsets with dramatic clouds. It is worth also keep in mind that broken horizons may lead to a dull feeling photograph.

If you want to add rhythm to your photo, look for layers of horizontal lines, for example layers of rolling waves. The rhythm can than become the focus or subject of the image itself.

Another good tip when using horizontal lines is to try it to try to keep the lines square with the edges of you frame and to also shoot your image in a horizontal format. Adding horizontal lines into your image can really make a difference to how your photo print to canvas will feel .

Vertical Lines

Vertical lines can convey a variety of different moods from grandeur and dignity to power. Objects such as trees and buildings represent horizontal lines. Combined with horizontal lines they can create a strong and dynamic picture. . If you really want to emphasize the dynamics of the vertical line, try switching your camera to the vertical plane. Although, as with all photography this is only a guide. If you want the lines to appear as if they are bursting out of the top of the picture, it then becomes useful to leave your camera in a horizontal format. Take your photo so that the lines move from the top to the bottom of your picture.

Diagonal Lines in Your Image

Diagonal lines that are used in your picture are sometimes considered the most interesting. They represent movement and speed. They can lead you into the frame of the image and to the centre of interest. A good idea is to avoid splitting the frame of your image in two by running diagonal lines from one corner of the picture to the other. The image my lose it’s drive from this particular cause. To achieve a more balanced photo within the confines of your frame try to create a diagonal that starts just to one side of the corner and runs to the one side of the opposite corner. Curved lines within your frame can also be representative of moods such as grace and dignity.

If you really want to add an interest to your finished photo print to canvas look for different ways to incorporate interesting diagonal lines into your image. Keep in mind when you are taking photos that it is worth remembering the different moods and feelings that they can convey.

Shapes

Shapes are basic two dimensional elements in the composition of your photos. You can use different shapes to achieve different moods within your photo. Shapes can include anything from triangles to odd numbers to create photographic geometry. Shapes such as squares and rectangle can be less interesting as they basically mirror the frame of the image, so it lacks interesting conflict. Make them more creative and use them with diagonals and triangles to create a more dynamic picture. Shapes can also be made more interesting by placing them against a contrasting background for example a red triangular tent against a snowy white backdrop. Silhouettes are also an ideal use of shapes. The use straight lines and curved lines or circles and can have a ability to create tension in your frame.

Conclusion

Shapes and lines can add a very dynamic and interesting element to you photo composition, so next time you have your camera out keep in mind these basic elements. To find out about printing your photo to canvas visit Canvas Prints Online.

DVD Digital Camcorder Explained

May 21st, 2009

For a person that has been looking for a good DVD digital camcorder but who has thus far not found what they are looking for the new offerings from Canon should provide some joy. Two of their DVD digital camcorders the DC 10 and DC 20 are excellent examples of how modern technology can provide you with unparalleled performance. The DC 20 in particular comes with charge-coupled device sensor (2.2 megapixels) which is superior to the DC 10 that can only boast of 1.3 megapixel charge coupled device sensor.

Not A New Item Of Equipment

DVD digital camcorders are not new because they have in fact been selling in most stores for a number of years and this is something that Canon is fully aware of. Still, with its DC 10 and DC 20 offerings Canon does provide some amount of high quality features that are packed in a compact product that does in fact ensure ease of handling coupled with convenience of transportation. The DC 20 in particular is one of the better DVD digital camcorders and the DC 10 is not too bad either.

If you want something more special then you need to check out other DVD digital camcorder models from Canon such as the IXY DV M5 as too the IXY DV S1 models. The former in particular is more power packed and boasts of 4.3 megapixel CCD sensors as too a ten by zoom and it is only two inches by four inches by four inches and weighs a mere one pound and it also has enough battery power to ensure that you get high performance. Though it is certainly worthy of being considered the Optura 600 for US buyers the M5 does however retail for a thousand plus dollars which is certainly a bit steep as far as costs are concerned.

Most importantly, before buying your digital camcorder makes sure to test out all the controls and check items such as exposure control as well as see how well the product works under various lighting conditions and especially in dim light settings. You can also look for features such as wide screen and the proper format.

If you are in the market for a digital camera to buy or a dvd digital camcorder then try and choose a product that does not simply rely on single ccd sensors which is what you would get in a majority of products. However, a look at Panasonic VDR-D300 should show you that there are good alternatives that will provide you with better options.
